KNOW YOUR BEST COLORS

Metals, rhinestones, and costume materials

Whether you're talking about your best metal colors (gold, silver, or a mix), or rhinestone jewelry, or costume jewelry with a variety of materials, knowing your best colors is essential.

Wearing your best colors will draw attention to your face and away from your bust. If you don't know your best colors, take my three-minute color quiz here.

I always recommend wearing jewelry in one of your best metallics or in a pop color simply because it's so close to your face that it's an easy way to draw attention exactly where you want it to go. Jewelry in your best neutrals is fine, too, but I try to avoid jewelry in my accent colors if possible.

KEEP IT LONG AND NARROW

Minimize your bust to create an hourglass

When it comes to shape, you'll want to wear a necklace that's long and narrow, as opposed to one that's short and wide.

Any time you can create a narrow vertical line near your bust, whether with a necklace, or a lapel, or an open cardigan, you'll break up the width of your chest, making you look smaller.

Avoid horizontal lines across the bust, anything that pulls (such as buttons that are pulling open), and accents or details near the bust. This includes a statement necklace that lays across the bust.

Here are a couple of visual examples of necklaces that would be great for camouflaging a larger bust. Just make sure that the necklace doesn't fall right into your cleavage because that would draw attention to your bust.

MAKE A STATEMENT

The statement should be "Look here!"

Super duper bonus points if you find a necklace that's in your best colors, is long and narrow, fits your personal style, is practical for your lifestyle, AND happens to hit right at the narrowest part of you. (And, if you find that unicorn, let me know!)

But if you have a necklace with an adjustable length, it's best if you can make it hit right at your narrowest part. That's especially true if it's a statement necklace with a pendant or something that really draws the eye in.

Any time you can start or finish something, create a horizontal line, or add a detail on your narrowest part, you're very subtly telling the eye to go there. Drawing attention to your narrowest part also draws the eye away from other areas. Cool, huh?!

LET IT BE PRACTICAL

Change the color and shape of an outfit

Don't forget that one of the main points in dressing well is for dressing for your real, actual lifestyle.

I love scrolling through photos of ball gowns, but I have no purpose for them in my everyday life. If I spent my clothing budget on those, I'd have no money left for jeans and things that I actually do really need.

The same goes for jewelry.

Even if I'm limiting my purchases to costume jewelry, I need to remember to have things that won't easily get tangled or broken by my son's curious hands. At this stage of my life, heartier jewelry is more practical than the delicate things I once wore.

But, because I do go out on dates and for a pastry with a friend, I do have the chance to wear daintier pieces now and then. I make sure I have some of each, but the vast majority are sturdier things or easy-release clasps so they can't get caught.
