Funky-Colored Pants

If you're wardrobe is feeling a little stale, try adding some funky-colored pants to your wardrobe. (Black, khaki, blue, and gray don't count.) Here's how to choose the best pants to freshen up your wardrobe.

START WITH YOUR BEST COLORS AND CUTS

This is the foundation for dressing well

I'm a HUGE advocate for arming yourself with as much information as possible before you even get to the store. That way, you'll be able to walk right up to the things that are probably going to work for you and past all the things that *might* be okay.

This takes away so much decision fatigue and energy needlessly spent trying on things that were never going to work anyway. In the end, you'll walk away with more home run pieces, fewer returns, and hopefully you'll have even had fun shopping!

Of course any time you go shopping, you'll want to choose something in your best colors and cuts. This is your first, and most important, step.

THEN COORDINATE WITH YOUR CLOSET

Create several outfits with one new piece

Then, once you know your best colors, it's time to narrow down your options to things that will best coordinate with your existing wardrobe.

I suggest going to your closet, pulling out a few tops that you'd likely be able to pair with the same new pair of pants.

That means you won't pull a shirt you wear to the gym and a shirt you wear to the office. Instead, choose a few shirts from your work capsule or a couple from your weekend capsule.

Then take a minute to see what color(s) would work with these tops. If they're prints, what colors do they have in common? If they're solid colors, what colors from your color palette would coordinate with most of these shirts best?

FINALLY, BALANCE YOUR SHAPE

Use color to camouflage and celebrate

Once you've found a few colors that are great for you and coordinate with your outfits, it's time to think about what color does to your shape.

Remember that our goal is always to draw attention to your face and away from any areas you'd like to conceal.

If you're wider on top, you'll want to camouflage your bust and draw attention to your lower half. You can do that with a lighter color or a pop color on bottom.

But, if you're wider on the bottom, you'll want to camouflage your hips and booty. In that case, you'll opt for a darker color of pants, probably in one of your neutrals.
