How to Choose a Necklace

Between color and length, how do you choose?

A great statement necklace, or a couple, can give you tons of opportunities for variety in your wardrobe. But, better yet, it can bring one of your best colors to your face and change the shape of your overall outfit at the same time.

>>  Here I'll walk you through how to choose a necklace with the following in mind  <<

- which color
- which shape
- how long
- your personal style

YOUR BEST COLORS

Coordinate with your natural coloring

I always start with color because it's the most powerful tool in our style toolbox. Color has the most impact on our overall look.

If you haven't learned your best colors yet, click here to take my three-minute color quiz. It will tell you your best neutrals, accent colors, and which colors will make you pop. It will also tell you which colors to stay away from.

When it comes to choosing a necklace, I suggest a pop color because it will bring attention to your face. However, using one of your best metals is also a great place to start because it will work with so many other things in your wardrobe.

WHICH SHAPE AND LENGTH

Statement necklaces in a variety of shapes

You might have a picture in mind of a statement necklace, but did you know that there is a variety of styles out there?

It might be something like a long tassel, or something short and chunky like a bib necklace. Here are a few different styles to give you an idea of what I mean.

But, no matter which style most represents your personal style, you'll also want to think about which one best creates visual balance for your shape.

If you find yourself as someone on the busty side, you'll want to stick with the long, narrow styles. They'll create a narrow line across your bust.

On the other hand, if your hips are wider than your shoulders, you'll opt for the shorter and wider styles. They'll add width to your upper half, balancing out the width of your lower half.

YOUR PERSONAL STYLE

Look like YOU, even if you don't know who that is

Beyond finding a color that coordinates with your own natural coloring and a shape that balances your figure, you'll want to think about your own personal style.

I'd hate for you to get caught up in following style "rules" and forget all about you and your personal preferences in the process.

But I know, from my own experience and from working with lots of women, that finding your own personal style isn't always easy. There are a couple of reasons for this.

Sometimes it's just that we haven't ever taken the time to stop and think about it and really focus on the question. Other times, the reasons are deeper.

If you grew up like I did, with so many rules that you ALWAYS knew what to do and how and when to do it, it can be tricky as an adult to figure you what YOU actually WANT. If there's no one to tell you what's right and wrong, and things are allowed to be subjective, and you're allowed to have an opinion, whew... that can be a lot to take on if you're not use to it.

I've developed a Personal Style Guide for women in both categories -- those who've just never stopped to think about their own style before, and for those who aren't sure how to go about doing that.

WELL ON YOUR WAY

Time to start shopping

Now that you've got your three pillars of style -- color, shape, and personal style -- nailed down, you're well on your way to finding the perfect necklace for you.

But, if you feel like you could use a little more help putting all the pieces together, or you'd like some suggestions of where and how to shop, I've got you covered.

What we talked about here was just the start of each of these topics. I have a complete course called CURATED that walks you through the steps of building a wardrobe you love from the ground up.

In it, I go more in depth into each of the three topics I touched on here. I also give you a plan for building a wardrobe around your lifestyle so that you always have something to wear for every even and activity that comes up in your daily life.

You'll find that you'll actually have what you need, and need what you have. That means you won't find any extraneous pieces shoved in the back of your closet that never get worn, and that you don't buy things that never see the light of day.

If this sounds like the right place for you, click here to join the waitlist for CURATED. It's a high-touch course, so it only opens once a year!
