If you're in the process of overhauling your closet, and you've recently learned that some of the things you've been wearing aren't best for you, you may be a bit concerned about financing a whole new wardrobe.
If that's you, don't worry. I have some tricks to help you extend your current wardrobe until you can afford to replace the things that don't work so well for you.
There are lots of directions you could go with this. Any kind of outer layer (blazer, cardigan, jacket, poncho, etc.) that you can wear with a lot of the outfits already in your closet will work. If you've already got something in your closet that fits this bill, great.
If not, a jean jacket might be a good first piece. You can use it to dress up a super casual outfit like sweats or dress down your office wear to go run errands. The key here is to make sure it's in a great color and length for you and that it fits your personal style.
>> Here I'll give you a few quick tips (and helpful links)
to help you find a great jean jacket that meets each of those criteria. <<
Coordinate with your natural coloring
No matter which style of outer layer you choose, you'll be bringing one of your best colors near your face and also covering up part of the top that's maybe not so flattering on you.
If you haven't learned your best colors yet, click here to take my three-minute color quiz. It will tell you your best neutrals, accent colors, and which colors will make you pop. It will also tell you which colors to stay away from.
As it relates to denim, or finding the perfect jean jacket, you'll get a sense of which shades of denim will best coordinate with your natural coloring.
This will ensure that when you walk into a room, we see you first and your jacket second. It will also draw attention to your eyes and away from any problem areas.
Additionally, if you're building a whole wardrobe using only your best colors, you'll be able to buy a jean jacket that will coordinate with everything in your closet, making it a single purchase that makes a bajillion outfits.
Length and detail create a balanced shape
When it comes to length, make sure the bottom hem doesn't hit at the widest part of you. If that's your booty/hip area, you'll want a shorter jacket. If that's your belly, you could go with a cropped jacket or a longer one that hits at the hips.
If your struggle is that you're quite busty, your biggest focus will be choosing a style that doesn't add bulk to your chest. You'll want to avoid breast pockets and large lapels. You might even opt for something like a denim blazer instead of a traditional jean jacket.
That way, you'll have fewer pockets, flaps, seams, and other details across the bust. See if you can find a flat chest area but then some super cute pockets or other details down near the hips to draw attention there and away from your bust line.

Time to start shopping
Now that you've got your three pillars of style -- color, shape, and personal style -- nailed down, you're well on your way to finding the perfect jean jacket for you.
But, if you feel like you could use a little more help putting all the pieces together, or you'd like some suggestions of where and how to shop, I've got you covered.
What we talked about here was just the start of each of these topics. I have a complete course called CURATED that walks you through the steps of building a wardrobe you love from the ground up.
In it, I go more in depth into each of the three topics I touched on here. I also give you a plan for building a wardrobe around your lifestyle so that you always have something to wear for every even and activity that comes up in your daily life.
You'll find that you'll actually have what you need, and need what you have. That means you won't find any extraneous pieces shoved in the back of your closet that never get worn, and that you don't buy things that never see the light of day.
If this sounds like the right place for you, click here to join the waitlist for CURATED. It's a high-touch course, so it only opens once a year!
