What to Shop for First

If you're completely redoing your wardrobe from top to bottom and just want someone to tell you what to buy, here you go. I'll list out my must-haves for all body types and color codes to create a basic starter wardrobe.

Note to VA: This article may seem completely pointless to you, and definitely will to some readers. I'm imagining this article to be for someone who grew up in a super controlling environment, probably super religious, and who was always told what to wear. This article is to help someone who is now leaving that environment and dressing herself for the first time in typical American clothes.

Because she just left a super controlling environment, she doesn't have anyone to guide her or much money, she probably is too embarrassed to go to a store and ask for help, and she just needs to quickly get some clothes to fit in.

She's probably also going to still want to dress rather conservatively, or at least, not stand out much. She doesn't want to take risks with her fashion so she doesn't look silly. Soon she may take huge fashion risks, but right out of the gate she's probably going for things that help her blend in.

UNDERWEAR

You'll definitely need to start with some undergarments. Here are some basic bras and underwear to get you going, along with a link to how to measure yourself for a bra and the various types.

If you've never worn a bra before, you don't have the time or energy to measure yourself, and you don't know what style you want, I suggest starting very simply with one of these two options. Grab a three-pack, and then, when you have the time and money to upgrade, learn how to measure yourself, learn about different styles, and choose your next one.

When it comes to underwear for your bottom half, I like these. They're fuller coverage, simple but cute, and comfortable. There are lots of other options you can learn about here, but these are a good starting point for now.

SHIRTS

Unless you've got a more professional job, a couple of basic shirts should get you started.

For a super casual look, here are a couple of tshirts and long-sleeved tshsirts.

Or, for a more elevated look, here are a few quick picks in both long and short sleeves.

PANTS

Jeans are a staple that will likely get you through your day-to-day life.

In general, a darker shade is more flattering, as is a more relaxed fit. Here are some of my favorites. Once you're ready to learn more about your best shade of denim and your best jeans cut, you can do that here.

DRESSES

In case you're more comfortable in dresses, here are some basics that will look good on any body type.

Here are a few favorite casuals for everyday wear. Simple sandals or flat shoes are great for a casual look, or dress them up a bit with wedges.
